My name is Kirsty. As cliché as it sounds, I have been interested in art since I was very young. Even as a 2 year old, when asked what I wanted to do with the day, the answer would be painting. I loved it, I could capture what I saw. This nurtured my passion for marine science, by painting marine wildlife that I saw. Shells, fish and more, which I recorded in my own way to look remember, and then later identify what I had seen.
Since then, I have used painting to relax and unwind. Having this interest meant I took art GCSE and A level at school. It was here that the subjectivity of art and the fact my teachers didn't understand my work, that I fell out of love with creating and painting.
So, I pursued my other passion, science, and followed my dream of being a marine biologist. However, whenever the chaos of life affected me, I often journeyed back to a sketchbook, using a paintbrush as a crutch through the stressful times.
The pandemic meant I couldn't carry on with the lifestyle that had previously side-lined my ability to invest time in art. The lockdown allowed me to really hone my skills and fall back in love. The concerted effort saw my skills rapidly exceed my expectations and inspiration hit me like lightning.
Nowadays my perspective has completely shifted, it now feels weird to not do art in every spare minute I have. Sitting still has never been in my vocabulary, but I am driven by the renewed creative juices coursing through my veins.
I use my art to engage, educate and inspire others about wildlife and the ocean, while adding a science spin to the work. My busy day job means I really focus the art I produce, and this drives me forward. I have even developed my skills in communicating science visually at work, bring art and science together, which defines me perfectly.
All in all, I am a creative through and through, overflowing with ideas, passion and celebrating the wild planet we live on. I look forward to taking you on this journey with me.
